Good things

The inside of my house is small, and holiday decorations tend to look cluttery very quickly, so I'm focusing on the outside of the house.

The kids are already talking about what they want to be for Halloween.  At this point, I believe we have one Harry Potter, and one Amelia Earhart.

Grace, my twelve year old,  has discovered Edgar Allen Poe's poetry.  She loves it.  But it wasn't me who introduced his poetry to her.  She found it all on her own with some internet research.  It's exciting to see her taking initiative and directing her own learning.  That's exactly what I want to see.

And this apple walnut torte was created by Grace today, who is quickly surpassing me with her skills in the kitchen.  It was scrumptious.  It was also gluten free.  I have been gluten free for several weeks now.  I'm still learning the ropes, along with a whole lot of new recipes.  This torte was a decadent as any pie that I might have to miss out on over the holidays.  Upon first bite, I knew....this gluten free thing is going to work out just fine.

Why are you gluten free Dawn and what, oh what, is everyone hating on wheat all of a sudden? Am I missing something?

http://celiacdisease.about.com/od/commoncomplicationsofcd/a/Managing-Your-Dermatitis-Herpetiformis-With-The-Gluten-Free-Diet.htm I think this is what I've been dealing with for the past month. I don't know for sure because my doctor wasn't interested in testing. She just prescribed some medicine that didn't help. After a couple weeks gluten free, I'm feeling much better. Eventually, I'll try wheat again and see what happens. But for now, I don't want to mess with anything. I just want to enjoy not being in pain.

I'm so glad going gluten free is causing you health improvements! And that you have a young chef in the family who can make being gluten free such a pleasant experience.

We don't do Halloween very much here, the American fascination with it is so charming.

I like Grace's crow illustration. :-)

It's kind of fun finding new tastes and ways of using things, isn't it? I never knew how versatile nuts, beans and rice could be until I went GF. Recently I've had to switch to a mostly liquid diet for health reasons; the change has really expanded my knowledge of fresh juices, smoothies and soups. Embracing change is a good thing! I'm glad the new diet is working for you.

Grace's raven was wonderful. And please, please send me the recipe for that gorgeous dish so I can make it for Murphy, too. I'd LOVE to have something wonderful for him this autumn. Please, oh please???

By the way, for years, we were fairly sure what Murphy was suffering from is what you describe, but we had no actual diagnosis. He was turned down for health insurance when I unwisely mentioned to the company that he might be gluten intolerant. I'd had no idea that they would view that as such an awful thing. And evidently, they had no idea that there are many, many levels to this. Finally, when he came back from his mission and was back at BYU, we decided to take advantage of the health insurance he had with the school - and it was a good thing, too - they okayed it for him to go to a doctor who could finally test for what he has - and the test came back positive for DP. But the test cost over $1000 with the doctor's bills included. Thank heaven for the insurance. They got it all down to about $300. He has no pain with his - only a skin rash. But it's no fun.

Kristen- Well maybe it's a good thing then, that I don't have an official diagnosis. I wouldn't want to have a hard time getting health insurance. Here's a link to that recipe. :) My pinterest link wasn't working..sorry about that.
